Troubleshooting QuickBooks Online Payroll When It Won't Run

Learn why QuickBooks Online payroll may stop, what to check first, and practical steps to restore service without guessing or waiting for support.

NEWSQUICKBOOKY

If you try to run payroll in QuickBooks Online and nothing happens, the subscription may have been suspended. This can leave employees unpaid and cause stress for the business owner. Below we outline common reasons and practical checks you can perform right away.

Why Payroll Might Stop Running

The most frequent cause is a problem with the billing setup. An expired credit card, insufficient funds, or a failed payment attempt can lead Intuit to pause the payroll add‑on. Another possibility is a temporary service interruption on Intuit’s side, though those are usually announced on the status page.

Steps to Verify Your Subscription

Log in to QuickBooks Online, go to the Settings gear, choose Account and Settings, then select Billing & Subscription. Look for the payroll line item; it should show Active. If it reads Inactive, Past Due, or Canceled, note the status and any message about payment failure.

How to Restore Payroll Processing

Update the payment method on the Billing & Subscription page. Enter a valid credit card or bank account that has sufficient funds, then save the changes. After updating, return to the Payroll center and try running payroll again. If the status changes to Active, the service should resume.

When to Seek Further Help

If the subscription shows Active but payroll still does not run, check the Intuit status page for any ongoing incidents. If no incident is reported, you can run the Payroll Diagnostic tool found under the Help menu to look for common configuration issues.

Your next step is to open the Billing & Subscription page, confirm that payroll is listed as Active, update the payment method if it shows any issue, and then try running payroll again.
