Tax Refund Timing: What Affects How Fast You Get Paid
How long tax refunds take, what speeds them up or slows them down, and practical steps small-business owners can take while waiting for a deposit.
When you file taxes through TurboTax or any other platform, the wait for a refund can feel uncertain. Refund timing depends less on the software you used and more on how you filed, how you chose to get paid, and whether your return gets flagged for review.
E-File with Direct Deposit Is Fastest
The IRS issues most refunds for electronically filed returns with direct deposit within three weeks. Paper returns take considerably longer — often six to eight weeks or more. If you mailed your return, tracking is limited and the timeline is largely out of your hands until the return is processed.
What Slows a Refund Down
Several common factors delay refunds regardless of how you filed:
- Errors or missing information on the return
- Identity verification requests, which require you to respond before the IRS releases funds
- Claims for certain credits, which are subject to additional review under PATH Act rules
- Banking mismatches, where a routing or account number error sends the deposit back to the Treasury
If the IRS needs more documentation, they will send a letter — not an email. Responding promptly is the fastest way to get things moving again.
Tracking Your Refund
The IRS “Where’s My Refund?” tool updates once every 24 hours, usually overnight. You will need your Social Security number or Taxpayer ID, your filing status, and the exact whole-dollar amount of your expected refund. Checking more frequently will not produce new information.
State refund timing is separate and varies by state. If you owed state taxes or are expecting a state refund, you will need to check your state’s revenue department site independently.
While You Wait
For small-business owners, a delayed refund can create a cash-flow gap. If you are still finalizing your books for the filing you just completed — reconciling accounts, tracking down missing transactions, or cleaning up reporting issues — that cleanup can help you avoid the same delays next year. For ongoing QuickBooks Online help and troubleshooting, keeping your records accurate throughout the year is the most practical step you can take toward a smoother filing season.
