They belong to scammers who answer quickly, sound professional, and ask for access to your computer, your login, or your bank details. Why do fake support numbers fill YouTube?

Payroll help is one of the most searched QuickBooks topics, and video is a cheap way to catch those searches. A scammer uploads a clip titled around the product and a support number, drops the number into the description, and waits for the search traffic. Many of these videos are recycled screen recordings with a synthetic voice reading a script.

The numbers also change often. Platforms remove reported accounts, and the same operation reappears days later under a new name with a new number. That is why a number a colleague used last year tells you nothing about the number in today’s video.

What happens when you call one?

You dial, and a person answers within a ring or two, calling themselves a QuickBooks payroll specialist. They may quote your software edition back to you, which sounds impressive but comes straight from a script. The next request is usually one of three things. Expect a request to install a remote access tool, sign in on a shared screen, or pay a fee to release a refund.

The goals behind those requests are simple. A login plus the codes from your phone gives them your account. A remote session exposes the bank account you use for direct deposit. Everything is urgent: payroll will fail today, data will be deleted, the offer expires within the hour.
Payment is requested by gift card, wire transfer, or cryptocurrency.

Intuit does operate phone support, and it lists its current contact options on its own website and inside QuickBooks under the Help menu once you are signed in. Those details change over time, so treat any number you memorized, screenshotted, or copied from a video as unverified. Intuit’s own security advice is clear as well: its staff will not ask for your password or the verification codes your phone sends. Anyone who does is not calling from QuickBooks.
