QuickBooks Online Sign-In Issues: Fixes for the Common Causes
Can't sign in to QuickBooks Online? Work through the usual causes in order: saved passwords, browser cache, verification codes, and service outages.
Signing in to QuickBooks Online should take seconds. When it does not, the cause is almost always one of a small set of things. A stale saved password, old browser data, a verification code that never arrives, or a service problem at Intuit covers nearly every case we see. This page works through them in the order worth trying.
Where do you sign in to QuickBooks Online?
QuickBooks Online runs in a browser, so there is nothing to install on your computer to reach your books. Go to the QuickBooks Online sign-in page from the official QuickBooks site, or use a bookmark you saved yourself. Enter the email address and password for your Intuit account. If your login opens more than one company, you pick the company after signing in.
One caution before you type anything. Pages that imitate the real sign-in screen do exist, and they collect exactly what you are about to enter. If a page asks for card numbers, ID documents, or anything unusual, close it and start again from the official site.
Your password is rejected
Start with the dull explanations. Check that Caps Lock is off, then look at what the browser actually typed into the field. Autofill loves to re-enter a password you changed months ago. Type the password by hand once, with your own fingers, before concluding anything.
If the password has genuinely gone, use the reset option on the sign-in page. The email with the link can take a few minutes and often lands in spam, so check both. Several failed attempts in a row can also block sign-ins for a while; if that happens, pause for a few minutes before trying again.
You sign in, but the company list is empty
This usually means the browser signed you in with a different Intuit login than the one holding your company. Two logins accumulate easily over the years: one made for personal tax software, say, and one made for work. Sign out, list the emails you might have used, and try each in turn. The company is almost always attached to one of them.
If someone else manages users for the company, it is also worth asking whether your access was changed.
The verification code never arrives
Intuit asks many users for a one-time code at sign-in as a second check. Text codes need signal and a current phone number; email codes land in spam folders surprisingly often. Check both, and check that the address or number on the account is one you can still reach. If the contact details on file are old, use the recovery route on the sign-in page. Expect it to ask questions that prove the account is yours.
The sign-in page misbehaves in your browser
A blank screen or a page that half loads points at the browser, not your account. Clear the cookies and cache for the site, or simply open a private window and try there. Private mode is the fastest diagnostic we know: if sign-in works there, the trouble is stored data or an extension, and clearing it fixes the problem. Pending browser updates are worth installing too, because very old versions can break modern sign-in flows.
Is the problem on Intuit’s side?
Sometimes nothing is wrong at your end. QuickBooks Online lives on Intuit’s servers, and when those have a bad day, sign-in fails for many people at once. Two quick checks settle it. Try signing in from another device, or another network, and glance at the service status Intuit publishes. If it fails everywhere, leave your settings alone; the fix is on Intuit’s side and arrives when they resolve it.
The sequence that solves most cases
Work through the checks in this order and most sign-in trouble ends before the last step. First, open a private window and sign in once. Second, type the password by hand. Third, run the password reset from the sign-in page. Fourth, try another device and check the service status. Start with the first one now: it takes under a minute and tells you immediately whether the trouble lives in your browser or somewhere beyond it.
