Search for the QuickBooks Online computer app and you will find plenty of video guides. Most of them walk through a program that no longer opens. Here is what changed, and how to run your books on a computer today.

Does the QuickBooks Online computer app still exist?

No, and that is worth knowing before you try to download anything. Intuit retired the dedicated desktop app for QuickBooks Online on Windows and Mac in 2021. Since then, the supported way in from a computer has been a web browser. The mobile apps for phones and tablets are a separate matter and remain available.

Which browser should you use for QuickBooks Online?

Any current mainstream browser will run it: Chrome, Edge, Firefox, or Safari. Google Chrome is the one Intuit recommends, so it is the safest default. Keep that browser updated. An out-of-date browser is a common cause of pages loading partly, buttons going missing, or reports that render strangely.

A separate habit helps just as much. Use a dedicated browser profile only for bookkeeping. Extensions, ad blockers, and autofill from everyday browsing can interfere with web software, and a clean profile keeps that noise away from your accounts.

Can you open QuickBooks Online in its own window?

Yes, and it takes about a minute. Sign in through the browser, then use its option to create a shortcut to the sign-in page and choose to open that shortcut as a window. On Windows the shortcut can sit on the taskbar; on a Mac it can live in the dock. The result feels close to the retired app: one click, one window, no tabs or address bar in the way.

You will usually stay signed in after closing the window. Treat that as a reason to lock your computer, and sign out on any machine you share.

Do the old video guides still help?

Largely, yes. The retired app displayed the same web interface inside its own window, so the screens in those videos match what you see in a browser. Any step that tells you to download the computer app is the one part to ignore.

Coming from QuickBooks Desktop?

For many people, the search for a computer app is really a question about leaving QuickBooks Desktop behind. That move raises fair questions about company data, lists, and history. We do QuickBooks Desktop to QuickBooks Online conversion work every day, and we can tell you before you commit what will and will not carry across.

Set up the shortcut, give the books their own browser profile, and you have the one-click access the old app promised. If a conversion or file question comes up along the way, that is our lane.
