QuickBooks Online Advanced Adds FP&A App and Two-Way Excel Sync

QuickBooks Online Advanced now includes a dedicated FP&A app and two-way Excel synchronization, giving accounting teams better budgeting and reporting tools.

QuickBooks Online Advanced Adds FP&A App and Two-Way Excel Sync

QuickBooks Online Advanced users now have access to tools designed to close the gap between basic bookkeeping and full corporate financial planning. Intuit has introduced a dedicated FP&A (Financial Planning and Analysis) app alongside a two-way Excel synchronization feature for Advanced subscribers. Together, these additions address a long-standing frustration for mid-market businesses: managing complex budgets and forecasts without exporting static reports to spreadsheets.

What the FP&A App Adds

Historically, QuickBooks Online has excelled at historical financial tracking—recording what already happened—but has lacked strong forward-looking budgeting tools. The new FP&A app integrates directly into the QuickBooks Online Advanced dashboard, allowing teams to build dynamic financial models, run scenario analyses, and create multi-departmental budgets. Because the app pulls live data directly from the QuickBooks general ledger, finance teams can analyze actuals against forecasts without manually importing CSV files.

Two-Way Excel Sync

The standout feature for many accountants is the two-way Excel integration. In the past, exporting a QuickBooks report to Excel meant working with a static snapshot; any changes made in the spreadsheet stayed in the spreadsheet.

With two-way sync, users can push data from QuickBooks into Excel, manipulate it using native Excel formulas and formatting, and push those edits back into QuickBooks. This allows teams who are deeply comfortable with Microsoft’s spreadsheet environment to use it as a direct interface for their QuickBooks data, rather than relying entirely on the browser-based QuickBooks interface.

Who Benefits Most

These updates are aimed squarely at growing businesses that have outgrown basic accounting workflows but are not yet ready to invest in standalone enterprise resource planning (ERP) software. Specifically, the tools benefit:

  • Internal finance teams that need to manage cash flow projections and departmental budgets across multiple cost centers.
  • Fractional and external CPAs who prefer to build financial models in Excel but need those models to reflect real-time client data.
  • Executives who require customized, visually formatted board reports without waiting for a manual month-end close process.

Practical Next Steps

Because these features are exclusive to the Advanced tier, users on Simple Start, Essentials, or Plus will need to upgrade their subscription to access them. Current Advanced subscribers should check their navigation menu or app center to ensure the FP&A tools are provisioned for their company file. For teams transitioning from Desktop or looking to optimize their QuickBooks Online setup, the best first step is to create a test budget in the FP&A app using a recent fiscal period. This allows you to verify that your chart of accounts maps correctly to the new forecasting modules before rolling the workflow out to your entire finance department.
