QuickBooks Error 9999: Why Bank Feeds Stop Syncing and How to Fix It

QuickBooks Error 9999 usually interrupts Online Banking connections. Learn what triggers this sync issue and the practical steps to restore your bank feeds.

QuickBooks Error 9999: Why Bank Feeds Stop Syncing and How to Fix It

When QuickBooks tries to pull in transactions from your connected bank accounts and the process fails, it often surfaces as QuickBooks Error 9999. The alert typically means that the connection between your financial institution and the software was interrupted or blocked entirely. This leaves your recent transactions stranded and prevents your accounts from updating properly.

What Triggers the Error

Error 9999 is almost entirely tied to bank feeds rather than a problem with your company file itself. The most common causes include:

  • Server maintenance or outages at your bank, which temporarily block third-party applications from logging in.
  • Expired login credentials, where your bank has required a password update or multi-factor authentication that QuickBooks has not yet processed.
  • Security lockouts, where your bank’s fraud prevention system flags the automated data pull as suspicious and halts the connection.

Update Your Bank Credentials

The first practical step is to ensure your online banking credentials are current. Open your bank’s website or mobile app in a separate browser and attempt to log in manually. If your bank requires you to update your password, accept new terms of service, or clear a security prompt, resolving those items will often immediately restore the connection to QuickBooks.

Force a Manual Update

Once you have confirmed you can log in to your bank’s portal directly, prompt QuickBooks to try the connection again.

  1. In QuickBooks, navigate to the Banking or Transactions menu.
  2. Select the Banking tab and locate the account that is failing to update.
  3. Click the pencil icon next to the account name and select Edit sign-in info.
  4. Re-enter your banking username and password carefully.
  5. Complete any multi-factor authentication prompts that appear on screen.

If the connection succeeds, QuickBooks will begin downloading your pending transactions again.

Check for Bank Outages

If your credentials are correct and you are still locked out, your bank’s servers might simply be down. Financial institutions routinely undergo scheduled maintenance over weekends or late at night. If you suspect a broader platform issue, waiting a few hours and attempting to update the feeds again is often the simplest resolution.

Disconnect and Reconnect the Account

When a standard update fails to clear Error 9999, the connection itself may be corrupted. You can safely refresh the link by disconnecting and reconnecting the account.

Go to your banking tab, select the edit pencil next to the affected account, and choose Disconnect this account. Once the bank is unlinked, use the Add account feature, search for your bank, and log in fresh. This process forces QuickBooks to establish a brand-new security token with your financial institution. Keep Your Books Current

Error 9999 is a frustrating roadblock because it halts the automated reconciliation process, but it rarely indicates data loss. By verifying your credentials, watching for bank outages, and forcing a fresh connection, you can usually get your transactions flowing into your ledger again without needing to manually import files.
