QuickBooks Enterprise Opens in a Small Window: How to Fix It

If QuickBooks Enterprise keeps opening in a small window instead of full screen, it is usually a saved preference or display issue. Here is how to fix it.

QuickBooks Enterprise Opens in a Small Window: How to Fix It

When QuickBooks Enterprise suddenly starts opening in a tiny, minimized window instead of maximizing to full screen, it is rarely a sign of a damaged company file. In most cases, the application is simply remembering an incorrect window size from a previous session, or there is a conflict with your computer’s display settings.

Here are the practical steps to force QuickBooks to remember the correct full-screen size.

Manually Resize and Close Properly

QuickBooks is designed to remember the window size and position from the last time it was closed. If the application was closed while in a minimized or restored-down state, it will continue to open that way.

  1. Open QuickBooks and log in to your company file.
  2. Do not use the Maximize button (the square icon in the top right corner). Instead, hover your mouse over the edges or corners of the QuickBooks window until the cursor turns into a double-sided arrow.
  3. Click and drag the borders until the window fills your entire monitor screen.
  4. Once the window is manually sized to fill the screen, open a few standard reports or centers (like the Customer Center) to ensure the internal layout looks correct.
  5. Close QuickBooks completely by clicking the X in the top right corner or selecting File > Close Company/Log Off, and then closing the application.

When you reopen QuickBooks, it should retain the manually resized dimensions.

Check Windows Display Scaling

High-resolution monitors often cause older Desktop applications to render incorrectly or default to tiny windows. If resizing the window manually does not stick, your Windows display scaling might be interfering.

Right-click the QuickBooks desktop shortcut and select Properties. Navigate to the Compatibility tab and click Change high DPI settings. At the bottom of that window, check the box for “Override high DPI scaling behavior” and select System or System (Enhanced) from the drop-down menu. Click Apply and OK, then open QuickBooks to see if the issue is resolved.

Clear Cached Preferences

If the window size still refuses to save, the application’s preference files might be stuck. You can reset these preferences by closing QuickBooks entirely and renaming the configuration file so the application is forced to build a fresh one.

Press the Windows Key + R to open the Run dialog, type %appdata%\Intuit\QuickBooks, and press Enter. Look for a file named QBW.INI, right-click it, and rename it to QBW.OLD. When you open QuickBooks again, the program will recreate this file with default settings, which often resolves stuck window states.

Switch the Home View

Occasionally, the internal layout of the QuickBooks Home page gets caught between the traditional view and the newer “Cash Flow” view, causing the outer window to shrink. Inside QuickBooks, go to the Edit menu, select Preferences, and click on Desktop View. Ensure the view is set to your preferred option, click OK, and then manually resize the main window before closing the program.

If the application continues to resist full-screen sizing after taking these steps, the next step is to run the QuickBooks Tool Hub. Opening the Quick Fix my Program tool within the Tool Hub will repair damaged installation files and reset standard application behaviors without affecting your company data.
