QuickBooks Desktop 2021 Login Keeps Spinning When Changing Passwords

When the Intuit sign-in window spins forever in QuickBooks Desktop 2021, you cannot reach the admin tools. Try these checks and password reset routes.

NEWSQUICKBOOKY

QuickBooks Desktop 2021 asks the admin user to sign in with an Intuit account before it opens the tools that manage users and passwords. Plenty of people now hit the same wall: you type your email, the window starts spinning, and nothing else ever happens. The problem is rarely your password or your account. It is almost always the small browser window QuickBooks uses to run the sign-in.

The spinning window is a browser problem, not a password problem

The prompt is not really part of QuickBooks. It is a compact web window that opens a secure connection to Intuit’s servers using the browser settings held by Windows. When the spinner never stops, that connection is failing. The usual culprits are a security tool inspecting the traffic, a wrong system clock, a network or firewall rule, or a rough patch on Intuit’s own servers. Rebooting rarely changes any of those.

Quick checks that fix most cases

Work down this list in order; each step is quick.

  • Try your email and password on Intuit’s own sign-in page in a normal browser. If that works, the account is fine and the fault is local to QuickBooks.
  • Check the Windows clock. The secure connection fails when the date or time is even slightly wrong, and the window will just spin.
  • Right-click the QuickBooks icon, choose Run as administrator, and try the login again.
  • Turn off your antivirus web shield or SSL inspection for a few minutes and retry. Some security tools intercept encrypted traffic and break this exact window.
  • In Windows, open Control Panel, then Internet Options, then the Advanced tab, and make sure Use TLS 1.2 is ticked.
  • Still spinning? Step away and try again later in the day. These failures tend to arrive in clusters while Intuit is having trouble on its side.

Can you change a user password without that window?

Often, yes. At the QuickBooks login screen, choose I forgot my password. The reset flow asks for your licence number and the contact details registered to your Intuit account, then emails a code or a temporary password. Because it runs through your web browser instead of the embedded window, it often succeeds while the normal sign-in keeps spinning. The exact steps vary slightly between releases.

Once you are back in as admin, open the Company menu, bring up the user list, and change the password you were blocked on.

QuickBooks Desktop 2021 no longer gets fixes

Intuit retired QuickBooks Desktop 2021 on May 31, 2024. Security patches, feature updates, and live support for that release have ended. That matters here: if the fault sits on the vendor’s side, no patch is coming for a 2021 build. You are working around the sign-in, not waiting for a repair.

If you would rather sit on a release that still receives updates, our QuickBooks upgrade service moves your company file to a current version with a sign-in flow that is actively maintained.

If nothing above works

When the checks fail and the reset route is closed, we can step in under our own name. Our QuickBooks password recovery service removes or recovers the admin password on your company file, so the login screen no longer stands between you and the user management tools.

Most spinning sign-in windows clear with one of the quick checks above. If yours does not, pick the path that fits: reset the password in a browser, move to a supported release, or let us open the file directly.
