QuickBooks 101 Training Events for Small Business Owners

QuickBooks 101 workshops at community incubators and colleges help new users get started. Here is what to expect and how to build bookkeeping skills.

QuickBooks 101 Training Events for Small Business Owners

Getting started with QuickBooks can feel overwhelming when you are also trying to run a business. That is why introductory workshops — often hosted by community organizations, small-business incubators, and local colleges — remain a popular way for new users to learn the fundamentals in a structured setting.

What a “QuickBooks 101” Workshop Typically Covers

An introductory session is designed for users with little to no prior accounting software experience. While every instructor sets their own agenda, most 101-level events focus on core setup and daily workflows:

  • Company file setup — creating a new file, setting the fiscal year, and entering basic business details
  • Chart of accounts — understanding how income, expenses, assets, and liabilities are categorized
  • Recording transactions — entering sales, invoices, customer payments, and bills
  • Bank reconciliation — matching QuickBooks records against monthly bank statements
  • Basic reporting — running a Profit & Loss statement and a Balance Sheet to see where the business stands

The goal is not to make you an accountant overnight. It is to give you enough comfort to handle day-to-day bookkeeping without second-guessing every entry.

Why In-Person and Community-Led Training Still Matters

QuickBooks has extensive built-in help resources, but many small-business owners learn faster when they can ask questions in real time. Workshops hosted by organizations like community incubators, Small Business Development Centers, and local community colleges tend to attract owners who are in the same early stage — which makes them useful networking events as well as training sessions.

If you have already chosen between QuickBooks Desktop and QuickBooks Online, it is worth confirming which version a workshop covers before you register. Some events are version-specific, while others focus on general bookkeeping concepts that apply to both.

Building on the Basics After the Workshop

A 101 session gives you a foundation, but real proficiency comes from applying what you learn to your own books. After the workshop, try re-creating one or two recent real transactions in your own company file while the concepts are still fresh. If you run into version-specific questions — especially around QuickBooks Online workflows — having that hands-on context makes it much easier to find a focused answer.

The most practical next step: bring a list of three recurring transaction types from your own business to the workshop, and ask the instructor to walk through how each one should be recorded.
