Practice QuickBooks Online in India: Free Options That Still Work

Intuit no longer sells QuickBooks Online in India, but you can still learn it. Here are the free practice routes that remain open to Indian learners.

NEWSQUICKBOOKY

Plenty of learners in India want a practice file: a safe place to try invoices, bank reconciliation, and reports without touching real books. The honest answer has changed recently. Intuit no longer sells QuickBooks Online in India, so a local sign-up is no longer an option. You can still practice, and we cover the routes that work below.

Does QuickBooks Online still run in India?

Intuit announced in 2023 that it would discontinue QuickBooks Online in India. New subscriptions stopped first, and existing companies were wound down afterwards. There is no India edition to join today, free or paid. Any practice company you create now will live on another country’s edition of the software.

Can you get a free account for practice?

Yes, through three common routes. Intuit sets the sign-up terms, so treat these as options to try rather than guarantees.

  • The sample company. Intuit publishes a QuickBooks Online test drive loaded with a sample business. No sign-up is needed, and nothing you break is permanent.
  • A free trial. Trials on editions that still accept new customers, commonly the US edition, give you a blank company and the full feature set, typically for thirty days.
  • QuickBooks Online Accountant. The accountant login is free and includes a sample company you can reset, plus room to open trial companies. Availability from India varies, so this route can take persistence.

Some paid training providers also bundle practice access. Treat that as a feature of the course, not a QuickBooks product in its own right.

Which edition should you practice on?

Use the edition your learning material uses, which usually means the US edition. Most courses and walkthroughs are recorded on it, so your screen matches the instructor’s. One caveat: the tax engine differs. US sales tax stands in for India’s GST, and payroll will not follow Indian rules. The core skills, double entry, reconciliation, and reporting, transfer without trouble.

A practice routine that teaches real skills

Clicking around teaches very little. Run a dummy month instead, and we suggest this sequence:

  1. Create a company for a plain, invented business, say a small stationery shop.
  2. Set up the chart of accounts, a few customers and suppliers, and two or three bank and cash accounts.
  3. Enter a month of activity: invoices, bills, payments, petty cash, and a couple of journal entries.
  4. Type out a simple bank statement by hand and reconcile against it.
  5. Pull the profit and loss, balance sheet, and trial balance, and check that they agree.

Then start a second company and repeat the month faster. Speed under repetition is the real skill employers look for.

Is QuickBooks Desktop a better route?

Usually not. Desktop is not sold or supported in India either, and its interface differs sharply from QuickBooks Online. Trials exist but are region-limited, and Intuit has pulled back on new Desktop sales generally. Unless a specific role demands Desktop, spend your practice time in QuickBooks Online, where most remote bookkeeping work now sits.

Where should you start today?

Begin with the sample-company test drive this week. It asks for no card and no commitment. Once the layout feels familiar, open a trial company and run the dummy-month routine above before the trial window closes. Export anything you want to keep; trial companies lapse when the trial ends.
