QuickBooks Desktop Ecosystem Grew 5% in Fiscal 2025 as Subscription Shift Completed
Intuit's annual report for fiscal 2025 shows QuickBooks Desktop revenue rising to $2.78 billion as the subscription transition finished and pricing lifted results.
The most consequential development in Intuit’s annual report for fiscal 2025 for QuickBooks Desktop customers is that the product line’s transition to a recurring subscription model is complete, and the change is now paying off: Desktop Ecosystem revenue rose 5% to $2,775 million, up $134 million from fiscal 2024.
What drove the growth
The report attributes the increase to two factors: higher effective prices, and changes Intuit made to its QuickBooks desktop offerings beginning in early fiscal 2024 to complete the transition to a recurring subscription model. That shift, the report explains, more closely aligns Desktop license and related product updates to the Desktop subscription billing model.
Within the segment’s revenue breakdown:
- QuickBooks Desktop Accounting revenue reached $1,672 million, up 6% from $1,575 million the prior year.
- Desktop Services and Supplies revenue came in at $1,103 million, up 3% from $1,066 million.
- The combined Desktop Ecosystem total of $2,775 million compares with $2,641 million in fiscal 2024 and $2,279 million in fiscal 2023.
Desktop still grew far more slowly than the online side of the business. The Online Ecosystem, which includes QuickBooks Online, Intuit Enterprise Suite, QuickBooks Live, online payroll, money offerings, Mailchimp, and QuickBooks Checking, grew 20% to $8,302 million and contributed $1.4 billion of the Global Business Solutions segment’s $1.5 billion revenue increase.
How Intuit packages Desktop today
The report describes QuickBooks Desktop as a subscription offering with two main products. QuickBooks Desktop Plus is designed for small businesses, while QuickBooks Enterprise targets mid-market businesses with more complex needs and is available for download or as a hosted solution. Enterprise provides industry-specific reports and features for Contractor, Manufacturing, Wholesale and Distribution, Retail, Nonprofit, Professional Services, and Accountants.
The Desktop Ecosystem also includes desktop payroll products, merchant payment processing and QuickBooks Capital financing for businesses using desktop offerings, ProAdvisor Program memberships for accounting professionals who serve small businesses, and financial supplies such as checks and tax forms.
A change in how updates are delivered
The report details a notable accounting shift tied to the subscription model. QuickBooks Desktop subscriptions include a term software license, version protection updates, when-and-if-available product upgrades and enhancements, support, and connected services. For subscriptions sold in fiscal 2024, periodic delivery of version protection updates ran through the first quarter of fiscal 2025. Beginning in the second quarter of fiscal 2025, product upgrades and enhancements are delivered on a when-and-if-available basis, with the associated revenue recognized on a straight-line basis over the term. Prior to fiscal 2025, Intuit had determined that enhancements in Desktop subscriptions were not material within the context of the contract.
The bigger picture
The segment containing Desktop, renamed Global Business Solutions in August 2024, posted total revenue of $11,077 million, up 16%, with segment operating income of $8,467 million, up 18%. The renaming, the report says, reflects the global reach of the Mailchimp and QuickBooks platform and a focus on serving both small and mid-market businesses.
