How to Undo a Reconciliation in QuickBooks Online, Step by Step
Learn how to unreconcile single transactions or undo a full reconciliation in QuickBooks Online, and what happens to your beginning balance afterward.

QuickBooks Online gives you two ways to reverse a reconciliation. You can unmark a single transaction in the register, or undo an entire period from the reconciliation history. The right route depends on how much went wrong, so we will walk through both.
When should you undo a reconciliation?
Typical triggers are a mistyped ending balance, the wrong statement period, a duplicate entry, or a transaction posted to the wrong account. Undo the whole period only when the reconciliation itself is wrong.
Often the culprit is not the reconciliation at all. An edited or deleted transaction from an earlier period shifts the starting balance, and the new period then will not tie out. We have seen books where fixing one old entry resolved the mismatch on its own.
How do you unmark a single transaction?
- Select Settings, then Chart of accounts.
- Find the account and select View register.
- In the status column, R means reconciled and C means cleared.
- Select the status box until it is blank, then repeat for any other entry.
- Save your changes.
This removes only the reconciled mark. The transaction itself stays in the account, otherwise untouched. Your user role needs permission to edit transactions in that account, or the box will not change.
Can you undo a whole period?
Yes, from the reconciliation history. Go to Settings, select Reconcile, and pick the account. On that screen, open History by account, find the period, and choose Undo from its action menu if the option appears.
If the option is missing, permissions are the likely reason. Firms with accountant access can run the undo from the Accountant Tools menu instead.
Undo runs one period at a time, newest first. To go back several months, repeat it and check the balance after each step. The undo removes the reconciled mark from every transaction in that period, and nothing gets deleted.
Save a copy of that period’s reconciliation report before you start. Once the undo runs, the saved summary for that period goes with it.
What happens to the starting balance?
Every entry you unmark moves the next reconciliation’s starting balance by the same amount. That is expected, not a new error. Fix the underlying problem, reconcile the account again, and the figure should settle once the corrected entries are matched back to the statement.
The audit log records each change, so you can trace exactly what was undone and when.
Habits that prevent the next mismatch
- Save the reconciliation report each month, before anything has a chance to go wrong.
- Fix the root cause first. An undo without a fix just carries the problem into the next period.
- If the starting balance is off by a familiar amount, hunt for an edited or deleted transaction before touching the current reconciliation.
If a period is already wrong, start small: unmark or undo only what is broken, correct the cause, then reconcile again the same day so your books and the bank statement stay in step.
