How to Fix the Payroll Service Connection Error in QuickBooks Desktop
Learn why QuickBooks Desktop shows a payroll service connection error and follow steps to restore the link, update payroll, and keep payments running.

QuickBooks Desktop may display a payroll service connection error when it cannot reach Intuit’s payroll servers. This can stop you from downloading tax tables or processing employee payments. The issue often stems from connectivity, subscription, or software update problems.
Check your internet connection
Make sure your computer is online and can access other websites. If you use a proxy or VPN, disable it temporarily to see if the error clears. A stable connection is required for QuickBooks to communicate with the payroll service.
Verify your payroll subscription status
Open QuickBooks, go to Employees, then Payroll Service, and select Account and Billing Information. Confirm that your payroll subscription is active and not expired. If it shows as inactive, renew the subscription through the same menu.
Update QuickBooks to the latest release
From the Help menu choose Update QuickBooks Desktop. Click the Update Now tab, select Get Updates, and let the installer finish. Restart QuickBooks after the update and try the payroll connection again.
Run the QuickBooks File Doctor tool
Download the File Doctor tool from the Intuit support site, run it, and choose the option to fix network issues. The tool will test your connection to the payroll servers and repair any corrupted settings it finds.
Adjust firewall and security software settings
Ensure that your firewall or antivirus program is not blocking QuickBooks or the ports it uses for payroll (typically 443 and 80). Add QuickBooks.exe and QBFC.exe to the exception list, then test the connection.
Reinstall the latest payroll update
Navigate to Employees, then Get Payroll Updates, and click Download Entire Payroll Update. Allow the update to install completely, then restart QuickBooks and attempt to process payroll again.
After completing these steps, try updating payroll once more and confirm that the error message no longer appears. If the problem persists, repeat the File Doctor scan and verify that your internet connection remains stable.
