Turning on expert bookkeeping help in QuickBooks Online
QuickBooks Online Plus and Advanced users can turn on included expert bookkeeping help through the Intuit Experts Hub; here is how setup works.
Community threads on QuickBooks Online keep surfacing one question: where is the expert bookkeeping help that Plus and Advanced plans include? We reviewed the accepted answer, and it does two jobs. It maps the full activation path, and it flags a silent default that hides the service on some accounts.
Who gets the service
The expert bookkeeping help is a bundled benefit, not a paid add-on. It ships with QuickBooks Online Plus and QuickBooks Online Advanced. Once live, an Intuit bookkeeping expert reviews and categorizes your bank transactions so the books stay current between your own sessions. The pitch is straightforward: less manual entry for you, more time running the business.
One default catches people off guard. If an outside accountant is already attached to your QuickBooks Online account, the service arrives switched off. The vendor does this so its experts do not duplicate work your accountant already handles. You or your accountant can enable it manually afterward. Nothing in the interface prompts you to, which is why the question comes up so often.
How do you turn it on?
Activation runs through the Intuit Experts Hub. The accepted answer gives this sequence:
- Open the Intuit Experts Hub.
- Select Start setup to activate the service.
- Enter the requested details, then select Turn on.
- Set your Transaction Posting Policy and your Asset and Expense Policy.
- Optionally schedule an appointment so an expert can walk you through the settings.
- Complete the remaining steps. The service starts on its own once setup finishes.
The two policies deserve real thought before you confirm them. They tell the service how transactions should post and how to treat assets versus expenses. Every judgment the expert team makes later leans on those settings.
The required setup call
Switching the service on is not the end of setup. A 45-minute call with an Intuit Expert is a required step, not an optional extra. On that call, the expert reviews your posting policies with you and runs the chart of accounts cleanup tool.
You are allowed to run that cleanup tool yourself before the call. Either way, the expert flags accounts that look unused or unclear. You then choose, account by account, whether to hide them or mark them inactive. The service only goes live after you approve the cleanup. The call is required, so plan for it rather than around it.
Ready to post, needs review, and requests for information
Once the service is live, your transactions fall into three streams.
High-confidence transactions, the ones QuickBooks can place from your history and your policies, get reviewed and posted by the expert in batches. Less certain transactions, where the category, class, or location is unclear, receive a manual review, and the expert posts them using their own judgment.
The third stream needs you. A transaction that is unrecognized or missing details gets marked Uncategorized, and the expert sends a request for more information. Reply with the missing context and the entry gets updated for you. Sitting on those requests is the one way the service falls behind, and that part sits on your side of the fence, not theirs.
Monthly and quarterly check-ins
Two recurring touches round out the arrangement. At the close of each month, the expert reviews your books to confirm that data entry is complete and accurate. Every three months, you can book another 45-minute call. That session walks through your profit and loss, your expenses, and your accounts receivable. You come away with three to five insights, some trends, and a plan for the business.
The short version
If the bookkeeping help seems absent from your Plus or Advanced subscription, check for an attached accountant first. That silent opt-out explains most of the confusion around this question. From there, the path is fixed: the Experts Hub, the two posting policies, the cleanup approval, and the 45-minute setup call.
