The error surfaces during the initial open sequence and points to a breakdown in the connection between QuickBooks and its underlying company-file database — a failure that can stem from a handful of distinct root causes, not all of them obvious.
What Error -6130 Means
At its core, -6130 is a database connection error. QuickBooks attempts to attach to the company file’s database engine when opening a file, and when that attachment fails, the error fires. The most common triggers are a file already reported as in use by another process or database engine, a transaction log (.TLG) or network descriptor (.ND) file that has fallen out of step with the company file, or genuine structural damage inside the company file itself. Because several of these causes produce identical symptoms, the resolution path moves from the simplest fixes toward the more involved ones.
Start With a Backup and File Doctor
Before attempting any repair, the first step is always creating a backup copy of the company file if one does not already exist. Working on the only copy of a damaged or locked file risks making the situation worse.
