QuickBooks Self-Employed bundle price lost on returns started in TurboTax

QuickBooks Self-Employed Tax Bundle subscribers who start in TurboTax first are charged full price; sending data first restores the benefit.

COMMUNITY ISSUESQUICKBOOKY

A familiar complaint reaches our desk each tax season. A QuickBooks Self-Employed subscriber arrives at TurboTax checkout, and the filing credit promised by the Tax Bundle is simply absent. The accepted answer on this issue is blunt about the cause. Sequence, not eligibility, decides whether the bundle applies.

Two returns, and one strict sequence

The Tax Bundle and the Live Bundle each include one federal return and one state return filed through TurboTax. That coverage attaches only when your tax data is sent across from QuickBooks Self-Employed before the return begins. Open TurboTax on your own and the program prices the filing as an ordinary paid return. Sending your books afterward will not apply the bundle price to a return already in progress.

The symptoms we see

Community reports follow two patterns. In one, TurboTax shows the regular filing price even though the subscription is active and paid. In the other, the send step appears to complete, yet nothing arrives and the return on the far side stays empty. Both trace back to the same roots: a return started too early, or two accounts that were never actually linked.

Four conditions the transfer needs

The accepted solution lists its preconditions plainly. Your subscription must be an active Tax Bundle or Live Bundle. Both products must sign in under the same Intuit account. The TurboTax return must not have been started yet. And the transactions in your books must be reviewed and categorized before anything moves. The link follows the account, not the person, which is why the email check at the end of the export matters.

Sending your data the right way

Work from inside QuickBooks Self-Employed, not TurboTax. The sequence, as accepted by the community, runs like this:

  1. Sign in and open the Home screen.
  2. Select the tax checklist link next to your profile icon.
  3. Work through each task on the list. Each task takes you to an area of your books that still needs review.
  4. Select the option to download your reports, and save them to your computer.
  5. Select Send to TurboTax.
  6. Check the confirmation screen, and confirm the email shown is the one you actually use for TurboTax.
  7. Send again, then choose whether your data goes to TurboTax Self-Employed or TurboTax Live.

Pick the flavor that matches your bundle. The ordinary Tax Bundle pairs with TurboTax Self-Employed, while the Live Bundle pairs with TurboTax Live.

Already started a return in TurboTax?

The fix is to start over, and the accepted answer is specific about how. Clear the return you began in TurboTax. Then open a new private or incognito browser window, because an ordinary window can carry the old session over. Sign in to QuickBooks Self-Employed in that fresh window and run the export again. From there the transfer behaves as intended, and the bundled coverage has a clean return to attach to.

If the two sign-ins don’t match

A second failure mode sits in the login itself. If QuickBooks Self-Employed and TurboTax answer to different accounts, the two cannot connect and the bundle cannot transfer. Three paths are open. Keep using QuickBooks Self-Employed and let a matching TurboTax account be created for you. Move your data into whichever account you plan to keep. Or keep both accounts and enter your details in TurboTax by hand.

Deductions that stay behind

One quirk deserves its own flag. Some deductions do not export automatically, and that is the real reason the download step exists. Keep the reports you saved close at hand, and check the affected areas in TurboTax against them before you file. A few minutes of comparison beats a missed deduction discovered after submission.

A clock on bundled access

Readers whose QuickBooks Self-Employed access came from the TurboTax side have one more deadline to mind. That access expires, and the standing advice is to finish reviewing and exporting your data before it does. The transfer itself is quick, but the window does close.

The rule to carry away is short. Send first, start second, and sign in with one account on both sides. Do that, and the bundle behaves exactly as advertised.
