QuickBooks Rolls Out AI-Powered Report Insights for P&L and Balance Sheet

QuickBooks' new Report Insights feature uses AI to surface trends, anomalies, and root-cause analysis inside Profit & Loss and Balance Sheet reports.

QuickBooks Rolls Out AI-Powered Report Insights for P&L and Balance Sheet

QuickBooks has introduced AI-powered Report Insights, a feature designed to help users spot meaningful changes in their financial statements without manually combing through thousands of transactions. The tool embeds automated analysis directly into standard reports, surfacing trends and anomalies alongside context about what drove the change.

Where Insights Appear

The feature is currently available on the single-entity Profit & Loss and Balance Sheet reports. Users access it through an Insights button in the report header, which displays a count of detected items. Selecting the button loads a preview panel of what the system found.

Within the report body itself, blue sparkle icons mark specific line items where the AI has flagged noteworthy changes. Clicking an icon opens a tooltip containing the detail for that particular insight.

What Each Insight Contains

Each flagged item follows a consistent structure meant to be read quickly. A hero number conveys the size or financial impact of the change. A headline summarizes what shifted. A chart visualizes the trend using twelve months of historical data. Finally, a root-cause analysis section attempts to explain why the change occurred.

How Root-Cause Analysis Works

The root-cause analysis component operates at two levels. Standard RCA automatically identifies the drivers behind a change — pointing to specific customers, vendors, products, or classes — and provides links to the underlying transaction lists so users can verify the data themselves.

For certain anomalies, a deeper Accounting AI review is available. This function performs transaction-level analysis and provides a written overview of its conclusions. Users can generate a detailed PDF report of this deeper review for record-keeping or further examination.

On single-entity reports, a button labeled Review Books with Accounting AI initiates this broader scan of the books to highlight possible accounting issues across the file.

Multi-Entity Consolidated Reports

For organizations managing multiple companies, the feature extends to consolidated Profit & Loss and Balance Sheet reports within Intuit Enterprise Suite. Users can review AI-generated insights from all selected entities in a single consolidated view, without needing to toggle between separate company files. This allows for side-by-side visibility into trends and anomalies across the entire group.

Practical Application

The feature is geared toward business owners and accounting professionals who want to move beyond static numbers and quickly understand the story behind a period’s results. Rather than exporting data to spreadsheets and building comparative formulas, users can rely on the embedded insights to point them directly to the accounts and transactions that moved.

To use the feature, users navigate to the Reports menu, select Standard reports, and open either a single-entity or consolidated Profit & Loss or Balance Sheet. From there, the Insights button in the header loads the available analysis. Selecting any item in the panel opens the detailed tooltip, where users can review the chart, read the root-cause breakdown, and follow links to the supporting transaction detail.

For users troubleshooting unexpected balances or verifying period results, these reporting tools can help clarify whether a flagged anomaly reflects a genuine business change or a data-entry issue that needs correction.
