QuickBooks Online users can request and manage their Intuit Account data

A guide to the Intuit Account download and delete request process in QuickBooks Online, including wait times and the privacy site data finder.

COMMUNITY ISSUESQUICKBOOKY

QuickBooks Online users who want a copy of the personal data Intuit holds on them, or who want that data removed, face a split path. The download request lives in the Intuit Account manager, reached from inside QuickBooks. The broader search for stray accounts lives on a separate privacy site. Both tools work, both move slowly, and the order of the steps is what catches people out.

The path to a download request

Start inside QuickBooks. Select the profile icon next to Settings, then choose Manage your Intuit Account, and sign in again when the Intuit Account Manager opens. The menu you need is Data privacy. From there, select Download, then Continue to confirm. That confirmation is the entire submission, and the request enters a processing queue.

The scope is wider than bookkeeping. A single Intuit Account covers QuickBooks, TurboTax, and Credit Karma, so one download request pulls personal data from all of them. There is no per product request to juggle. Users on any QuickBooks Online plan, including sole trader users, take the same route.

How long does a download take?

Download requests usually take up to 15 days. The size of the request drives the timing, so an account with years of history can sit near the top of that range. While a request is open, the system will not accept a second download or delete request from the same account.

That lock shapes the sensible order of operations. If you want a copy of your data before you erase it, request the download first and let it finish. Going straight to deletion leaves you without a copy until that request completes.

Finding accounts you forgot you had

Some personal data sits in Intuit Accounts people do not realize they hold. An old TurboTax return or a trial signup can leave one behind, and it may not surface through the standard download. The Intuit privacy site has a separate tool for this. Open the site, select Manage your data, then Help me find my data. Complete the form with your information, select Continue, and follow the identity confirmation steps that arrive by email.

The emails list any Intuit Accounts tied to your details, along with the data each one holds. There is also a path marked I don’t have an Intuit Account, aimed at users who are sure they never signed up. We suggest running it before you assume the answer. Old records have a way of surfacing.

How does a delete request differ?

Deletion starts from the same Data privacy section of the account manager. Select Delete, then Make a delete request to confirm. These requests can take up to 90 days to complete.

One warning deserves emphasis. During those 90 days, do not create a new Intuit Account with the same email address. Anything built under that address during the window may be swept up and removed along with the old data. If you need to re-register for any reason, wait until the request closes.

Inside the finished export

The download arrives as a compressed archive. Windows and Mac both unzip these natively, so no extra software is needed. Once opened, the contents are labeled rather than self explanatory.

One small text file, preparerinfo.txt, holds your tax preparer’s personal information. Two grouped files carry analytics in sets, and each set includes a short description of what the data covers. Typical entries include firm name, contact details, and electronic return originator information. Read the descriptions before deciding any of it is disposable.

One request at a time

The single request queue is the constraint worth planning around. A copy first, then a deletion, can stretch well past three months end to end. A download and a delete cannot run at the same time, so sequencing is not optional. If you are changing the email on your account or restructuring logins, finish any open request before you start. The queue does not bend for urgency, and a deleted export is not something anyone recovers by asking twice.
