QuickBooks Desktop 2023 users face the May 31, 2026 service cutoff

QuickBooks Desktop 2023 loses online banking, payroll, payments, and email after May 31, 2026, and users are now seeing prompts about the cutoff.

The March 24, 2026 maintenance release for QuickBooks Desktop 2023 and Enterprise 23.0 arrived carrying a deadline. Messages inside the product now warn that connected services switch off after May 31, 2026. Anyone still on the 2023 release line sees that clock every time the software checks in.

The warning built into the product

Intuit added the discontinuation prompts in that March release. They state the cutoff plainly: services end after May 31, 2026. Nothing is broken when one appears, and there is no error code to chase. This is a scheduled end of support, not a malfunction, and treating it as a bug leads nowhere.

Which services stop after May 31, 2026?

The list is long because it covers everything that talks to the vendor’s servers. Online banking stops downloading transactions. Payroll stops calculating, filing, and paying. Payments and eInvoicing go dark, and so does email sent from inside the program.

Accountant Copy File Transfer disappears, which breaks the exchange workflow many accountants run with client files. Multicurrency company files lose automatic exchange rate downloads. Contributed Reports, the shared library of custom reports, loses its sharing and rating features. The TSheets time tracking connection and the linked backup service switch off as well.

The software itself keeps opening after the cutoff. Company files stay intact, and local bookkeeping continues. Anything that needs a server on the other end stops on schedule.

Updates that appeared to do nothing

Desktop 2023 received several releases through 2025 with no published feature notes. Builds dated August 4, August 14, August 26, and October 24, 2025 were described as advancing build numbers only. If an update in that window seemed to change nothing, that is why. Staying current still mattered, because later tools depend on it.

Getting current through the Help menu

We suggest confirming your release first. Press F2, or hold Ctrl and press 1, and the product information window opens; its first line shows the version and release number.

To update, open the Help menu and choose Update QuickBooks Desktop. In the window that appears, select the Update Now tab, then choose Get Updates. Once the download finishes, close and reopen the program to finish installing. Automatic updates can handle this quietly: in the same window, open the Options tab and switch them on.

The Shipping Manager switch in December 2025

A release dated December 11, 2025 carried the year’s biggest visible change. The old Shipping Manager stopped being available after December 7, 2025, and shipping work moved to a replacement called the New Shipping Manager. Anyone who reached for the old tool after that date found it gone.

Two steps restore shipping. Set up the New Shipping Manager, and make sure the installation sits on the latest release, because the tool appears only in current builds.

Payroll and 1099 changes in the same release

Payroll users in Virginia hit a hard stop. The Job Title field became mandatory for any employee subject to Virginia payroll taxes, and records will not save or update until the field is filled. Anyone stuck mid-edit gets moving again by adding a job title and saving.

One 1099 mapping also moved. Excess golden parachute payments now report in Box 3 of Form 1099-NEC rather than Box 14 of Form 1099-MISC, in line with updated form requirements. Year-end vendor reporting shifts accordingly.

Upgrade before the cutoff

The prompts now appearing in Desktop 2023 are the resolution path in disguise. They tell you the version’s time is nearly up. Updating inside 2023 keeps the software current but does not extend any service.

Only moving to a newer annual version preserves online banking, payroll, payments, email, and the rest of the connected set past May 31, 2026. Until then, the version remains fully usable. Back up the company file before any version change, and verify that bank feeds reconnect once the upgrade completes.
