QuickBooks Desktop 2023 services end May 31, 2026 under sunset policy
QuickBooks discontinues live support, payroll, payments, and online banking for Desktop 2023 versions after May 31, 2026. Here is what changes.
QuickBooks Desktop 2023 reaches the end of its supported life on May 31, 2026. The sunset applies to every 2023 edition: Pro Plus, Premier Plus, the Accountant editions, and Enterprise Solutions 23.0. We break down what stops working, what keeps working, and what existing subscribers can do at no extra cost.
What actually ends on May 31, 2026?
The software itself does not stop opening. Your company file stays on your computer, and you can keep entering transactions in the program after the cutoff. What ends is everything that depends on Intuit’s servers and support systems.
After May 31, 2026, version 2023 loses live technical support, QuickBooks Desktop Payroll, QuickBooks Desktop Payments, online backup, and online banking connections. Critical security patches also stop. From June 1 onward, the product runs without the updates that protect your financial data, which leaves the file and the machine it lives on exposed to known vulnerabilities.
That last point deserves emphasis. An unpatched accounting program holding your books is a real risk, not a theoretical one. Payroll and bank feeds failing mid-run is disruptive; a security hole in the software holding your ledger is worse.
Why does Intuit retire versions at all?
The policy follows a predictable rhythm. Intuit supports each Desktop release for roughly three years, notifies users in advance by email, in-product messages, and its own notice pages, then cuts the connected services on a fixed date. The 2023 release follows the same pattern earlier versions did.
The reason is practical. Payroll tax tables, bank connection standards, and payment processing rules all change every year. Keeping old versions current against those changes costs engineering effort that scales with every release still in the field. A fixed support window lets Intuit concentrate on the current versions.
What should you do before the deadline?
If you hold an active QuickBooks Desktop Plus or Desktop Enterprise subscription, the fix is straightforward. The 2024 version is included in your annual subscription as a built-in benefit, at no additional charge. You upgrade from within your existing subscription, your data moves with you, and your payroll, payments, and banking connections carry over without interruption.
The upgrade path differs slightly between Plus and Enterprise, but the principle is the same: install the newer release, let it convert your company file, and verify that your bank feeds and payroll service reconnect before the deadline. Do not wait for the last week of May. Conversions occasionally surface file issues, and you want time to resolve them while version 2023 still has live support behind it.
Can you stay on 2023 anyway?
You can, and some users do, but you should understand the trade. Without payroll, you would calculate and file taxes manually. Without bank feeds, you reconcile by hand from statements. Without payments, integrated card processing stops. And without security patches, every newly discovered flaw in the product stays unpatched on your machine forever.
For a business of any size, that combination rarely makes sense. The subscription you already pay for includes the newer version, so the usual reason to stay, avoiding cost, does not apply here.
What about moving to Enterprise?
For users on Pro or Premier who are outgrowing them, the sunset is a natural moment to consider Desktop Enterprise 24.0. Enterprise handles larger lists, more users, and more complex inventory than the smaller editions. The accepted guidance treats it as one of the two sanctioned destinations: either step up to Desktop Plus 2024 within your subscription, or move to Enterprise 24.0 if your needs have outgrown Plus.
The short version
Mark May 31, 2026 on your calendar if you run any 2023 Desktop edition. Before that date, upgrade through your existing subscription at no extra cost, confirm payroll and bank feeds reconnect, and retire the old version. After that date, version 2023 keeps launching but loses the services and protections that make it safe to run a business on.
