Fixing QuickBooks Online beginning balance issues for reconciled accounts
QuickBooks Online users can fix beginning balance mismatches by checking opening balance, bank statement, downloaded transactions, and discrepancy reports.

When a QuickBooks Online account has been reconciled before, the beginning balance in the next reconciliation is supposed to match the bank statement on the same start date. When it does not, the account is almost always telling you something about earlier work, not about the current period. The accepted answer to this recurring support question points to four causes and a four-step correction.
Why the beginning balance is the first thing to check
QuickBooks Online uses the beginning balance as the anchor for the whole reconciliation. It is the amount in the account at the start of the period under review. If that number is wrong, every transaction you approve is judged against a bad starting point. The account can look out of balance even when your underlying records are fine.
The beginning balance for a previously reconciled account is tied to the ending balance of the last completed reconciliation. That link is why old edits keep showing up as new problems.
What causes the mismatch
The accepted answer lists four common causes.
- The opening balance entered when the account was created in QuickBooks Online was incorrect.
- Transactions dated before the opening balance were added later, but the original opening balance entry was not changed to reflect them.
- A transaction that had already been reconciled was edited, deleted, moved, or unreconciled. That changes the ending balance of the prior reconciliation, which shifts the next beginning balance.
- A transaction was reconciled manually, so it never appeared in the next reconciliation.
The symptom is plain. You open the reconciliation window, compare the beginning balance with the bank statement, and the two numbers do not line up.
The four-step fix
The published solution takes you through the checks in order.
Before you begin
The fix assumes two things. You have admin rights to view and edit reconciliations, and you have the bank statements for the account ready. Without the statement, the beginning balance has nothing to be checked against.
1. Review the original opening balance
Start with the opening balance entry that QuickBooks Online created when you added the account. Compare it with the account statement from that time. If the opening entry is wrong, the problem starts there. Correct that entry first, because everything else builds on it.
2. Check the bank statement
Keep the bank statement for the period in front of you and read the balance for the first day. The beginning balance in QuickBooks Online should match it. If the statement disagrees, the source of the issue is inside QuickBooks, not the bank.
3. Match and categorize downloaded transactions
Transactions pulled in through bank feeds can sit uncategorized and unmatched. Those items need to be matched to the right entries and categorized before reconciliation moves forward. If they are left alone, they push the starting number further from the statement.
4. Review discrepancy reports
A discrepancy report is the record of changes made to reconciled transactions. With admin rights, you can open it. The report surfaces edits, deletions, moves, and manual reconciliations. Find the entries that were changed after the prior reconciliation and correct them. That restores the prior ending balance, and the beginning balance falls back into line.
When these steps do not apply
This sequence assumes the account has been reconciled at least once. If this is your first reconciliation, the starting point is different. The same causes may still be useful to understand, but you should begin with the opening balance and the first statement rather than with the discrepancy report.
The takeaway
A beginning balance mismatch is not a sign your books are unrecoverable. It is a signal that something changed after the last reconciliation. The accepted answer narrows the search to a handful of causes, and all four can be checked in a short sitting. Once the opening entry is sound, the bank statement agrees, downloaded transactions are categorized, and the discrepancy report is clean, you can start reconciling with confidence.
