Delaware Quarterly Withholding Return (Form WTH-TAX) in QuickBooks
QuickBooks prefills most fields on Delaware's quarterly withholding tax return, but filers should understand which lines are editable and how adjustments work.
QuickBooks Desktop includes built-in support for Delaware Form WTH-TAX, the Quarterly Withholding Tax Return, and prefills most of the fields automatically based on existing company, payroll, and employee data. Even so, filers are responsible for reviewing every field before submitting the return to the Delaware Division of Revenue.
When to Use Form WTH-TAX
Form WTH-TAX applies to employers required to remit Delaware withholding tax on a quarterly schedule. Returns are due on the last business day of the month following the close of each calendar quarter. If the deadline lands on a weekend or holiday, it shifts to the next business day. Quarterly filers must submit a return for every quarter — regardless of how much or how little state tax was withheld during the period.
What QuickBooks Fills In Automatically
When company setup, payroll items, and employee records are all current, QuickBooks populates the majority of the form without manual entry. The software transfers withholding data from payroll transactions into the appropriate lines. Users should still open the form, verify that every field is accurate, and complete anything QuickBooks left blank.
Key Fields to Review
Delaware Taxpayer ID
Delaware requires a 13-digit account number on the return. If the number appearing on the form is incorrect or missing digits, the fix lives in QuickBooks Payroll Setup or the Payroll Item List — not on the form itself. Correcting the source record ensures future returns pull the right identifier.
Amended Return
A checkbox on the form designates an amended filing. Select it only when submitting a corrected version of a previously filed quarterly return.
Line 1 — Tax Withheld
Line 1 shows the total Delaware income tax withheld from employee wages during the quarter. QuickBooks imports this figure from payroll data. Filers can edit the amount directly on the form if a correction is needed, though the underlying payroll records should be the primary source of truth.
Line 2 — Amount Remitted
Line 2 defaults to the same figure as Line 1. The form allows filers to edit Line 2 when the amount being remitted differs from the tax withheld shown on Line 1. According to the accepted QuickBooks guidance, if a prior return underreported tax, the filer adds that shortfall to the Line 1 figure and enters the combined total on Line 2. If a prior return overreported tax, the filer reduces the Line 1 figure by the overage and enters the net amount on Line 2.
When Line 2 differs from Line 1, the form requires a period-ending date for the adjustment along with a written explanation on the back of the return.
Important caveat: The adjustment mechanics described above come from QuickBooks’ own form guidance, but tax professionals and reviewers have flagged this area as potentially unreliable. Before modifying Line 1 or Line 2 to account for prior-period corrections, verify the proper treatment directly with Delaware Division of Revenue filing requirements or a qualified tax advisor. State agencies sometimes prescribe specific amended-return procedures that differ from simply adjusting totals on the current-quarter form, and following the in-product instructions without outside verification could result in an incorrectly filed return.
Signature Area
The return requires an email address, phone number, date, and signature before mailing.
Additional Resources Within QuickBooks
The form window includes a Help button for general navigation and field-level troubleshooting. QuickBooks also provides hyperlinks within the return that explain how withholding amounts are calculated, how to summarize payroll data in Microsoft Excel, and how to save a completed copy of the form as a PDF for your records.
Bottom Line
Delaware’s quarterly withholding return is largely automated in QuickBooks, but the editable lines — particularly around adjustment handling — warrant close attention. Treat the prefilled figures as a starting point, not a guarantee, and confirm any correction methodology against authoritative state guidance before filing.
