Bank feed connection stalls at Continue for QuickBooks Online users

UK QuickBooks Online users hitting a dead Continue button after bank sign-in; accepted fix is a clean reconnect via Bank transactions.

Bank feed connection stalls at Continue for QuickBooks Online users

When a QuickBooks Online connection in the UK stalls after the bank sign-in page, the usual reason is the feed set-up itself. Users who select their bank, accept the terms, and then find Continue unresponsive are left without the new tile on the Bank transactions screen. The product in the reports is QuickBooks Online, and the same failure appears in the Sole Trader app.

What users are running into

The symptom is consistent. The bank finishes its own security check and returns the user to QuickBooks, where Continue does nothing. In many postings there is no error code at all, just a silent stop. A typical variation: a business owner connects a company credit card without trouble and then tries a current account from the same bank. That second attempt dies on the same button.

The accepted answer for this thread comes from the vendor and was updated within the last month. It does not tell you to change banking passwords or to start a new company file. It treats the dead Continue as a bank connection error and walks through the correct way to establish the link.

Why this is happening in the UK

The context is Open Banking. QuickBooks Online in the UK is now pulling feeds over Open Banking routes, and older feeds carry a disconnection date. That explains why an account that connected months ago can suddenly require a fresh connection and why that fresh connection now behaves differently.

Open Banking is not a worldwide option. It depends on UK regulation and on banks that have signed up to the connection standard. If your bank does not support it, no amount of retrying Continue will create an automatic bank feed. The accepted answer says the only remaining route for those accounts is to upload transactions manually.

Where the connection should be started

The accepted fixing step is navigating to the right screen. Go to All apps, select Accounting, and then open Bank transactions. After that:

  • Choose Connect account when no account is linked.
  • Choose Link account when you already have one linked.
  • For Sole Trader, open the New transaction menu and choose Link account.

This placement matters. The connection options are not in account settings; they live in Bank transactions, and the words on the button change depending on whether an account is already connected.

After choosing the bank, accept the terms and sign in with your ordinary online banking credentials. On the account selection screen, make sure the account type matches your chart of accounts. A bank account should be under Bank with a detail type of Cash at bank and in hand or Savings; a credit card belongs under Credit Card. If the right type is not listed, choose Add new and set it before continuing. Banks generally offer transaction history from 90 days to 24 months, and the new transactions start from the date you choose.

For an account that is already set up in the chart of accounts, avoid creating a duplicate. Use All apps, open Accounting, then Chart of accounts. Find the account, open the Action dropdown, and choose Connect bank. The connection then runs through the same bank sign-in and consent flow.

When Continue still will not respond

The accepted answer is short on this exact symptom. A Continue button that does nothing after sign-in counts as a bank connection error, not a problem with your login details. The practical fix is to stop clicking Continue and start a clean connection attempt. Close the bank sign-in tab, return to Bank transactions, choose Link account again, and repeat the steps from your bank selection onward.

A fresh attempt matters more than clearing anything else in QuickBooks, because the failed attempt leaves a stale hand-off between the bank and QuickBooks. In the discussions, that is the difference between a successful second try and a loop of dead buttons. If the bank does not participate in Open Banking, the same fresh attempt still cannot force a feed. Manual upload remains the accepted fallback.
