QuickBooks Desktop 2024 Ends Forced Upgrades, Plus Payments and Sync Fixes

QuickBooks Desktop 2024 drops the three-year sunset rule, Mac users hit a Payments block, and deposit mismatches surface — here is what you need to know.

THE DAILY BRIEFQUICKBOOKY
  • No more forced sunset — QuickBooks Desktop 2024 abandons the three-year discontinuation cycle in favor of continuous in-product updates, a shift that changes how you plan upgrades and budget for subscription renewals.
  • Mac Payments cutoff — Desktop for Mac 2021 R6 and 2020 R9 or earlier lose full Payments functionality unless upgraded to the current release.
  • Deposit account mismatches — QuickBooks Desktop can auto-record Payments deposits, but users frequently report deposits landing in the wrong account or failing to match bank statements.

Desktop 2024 Changes the Upgrade Math

The biggest structural shift this week is Intuit’s decision to drop the three-year sunset for QuickBooks Desktop 2024. Instead of annual releases that eventually lose support, the product now receives continuous in-product updates. If you are planning hardware refreshes alongside the software change, the 2024 system requirements demand 64-bit Windows, tiered server RAM based on user count, and current Microsoft Office versions. The 2023 requirements remain relevant for anyone still on the prior release.

Payments and Deposits: Where Things Break

Mac users on older versions face a hard cutoff — 2021 R6 and 2020 R9 or earlier lose full Payments functionality unless upgraded. Even on supported versions, Payments deposits don’t always land in the right account. Desktop can auto-record deposits, but mismatches against bank statements are common enough that reconciliation requires checking the deposit-to account on each transaction, not just the undeposited funds clearing step.

Time, Payroll, and Bill Pay Workflows

For payroll teams, QuickBooks Time-to-Online sync errors stem from several identifiable blockers — the sync log pinpoints which one is responsible. Oregon employers running Desktop Payroll must manually configure the Worker Benefit Fund assessment per employee. On the billing side, QuickBooks Business Network vendor payments eliminate manual ACH entry for connected vendors, and accountants can now add Bill Pay through QBO Accountant across three tiers.
